Noninvasive measurements of myocardial oxygen consumption--can we do better?
نویسنده
چکیده
Normal cardiac performance reflects the interdependence between myocardial mechanical function, myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2), and blood flow. Indeed, physiologic processes directly associated with systolic function (e.g., wall stress, shortening, heart rate, contractility) are major determinants of MVO2. Conversely, when myocardial blood flow is interrupted, there is rapid cessation of MVO2 and systolic function. The linkage between myocardial blood flow and mechanical function provided by MVO2 reflects primarily the oxidation of substrates for myocardial energy production. Consequently, because of the central role of MVO2 in cardiac physiology, the noninvasive quantification of MVO2 is crucially important in both cardiovascular investigation and clinical cardiology.

Use of carbon-11 acetate and dynamic positron emission tomography to assess regional myocardial oxygen consumption in patients with acute myocardial infarction receiving thrombolysis or coronary angioplasty.
Carbon-11 (C-11) acetate has been introduced for the noninvasive measurements of myocardial oxygen consumption. This study was designed to assess regional C-11 acetate clearance in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Thirty-one patients were studied within 8 days of acute myocardial infarction. C-11 acetate washout-rate constants were significantly lower in the infarct territory than in ...
متن کاملI-11: The Use of Oxygen Consumption for Oocyte and Embryo Selection
Assisted human reproduction is characterized by a high variability in results regarding pregnancy and birth rates. In fact, in a cohort of fertilized oocytes from the same stimulation cycle, the development rate varies drastically, even though produced at the same time and under similar conditions. This variability results in large differences in implantation potential of human embryos develope...
متن کاملMyocardial perfusion scan accuracy in detection of coronary artery disease - Comparison with exercise stress test [Persian]
Introduction: In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) noninvasive evaluation for detection of ischemia is important to avoid invasive interventions like angiography. Exercise stress test is conventionally the first study used in evaluation of CAD. Considering the noninvasive nature of the myocardial perfusion scan, we decided to compare its accuracy with stress test. Methods: Patie...
متن کاملNoninvasive quantitation of regional myocardial oxygen consumption in vivo with [1-11C]acetate and dynamic positron emission tomography.
The usefulness of [1-11C]acetate as a tracer of overall myocardial oxidative metabolism for use with positron emission tomography has been investigated in 12 closed-chest dogs. Myocardial 11C activity clearance kinetics after intravenous administration of [1-11C]acetate in dogs have been determined noninvasively by positron emission tomography. Biexponential fitting of regional myocardial 11C t...
متن کاملA transient diffusion model of the cornea for the assessment of oxygen diffusivity and consumption.
PURPOSE Oxygen diffusivity and consumption in the human cornea have not been directly measured yet; current models rely on properties measured in vitro in rabbit corneas. The aim of this study was to present a mathematical model of time-dependent oxygen diffusion that permits the estimation of corneal consumption and diffusivity. METHODS The current oxygen diffusion model was extended to incl...
